Professional Practice 2 - QSB 60904

I was looking forward to this module ever since we had our Professional Practice 1 module. Back in Semester 4, I enjoyed the topics covered in Professional Practice 1 as I always found that the topics were very related to what we are going to face as quantity surveyors. I always found that the topics in Professional Practice modules are just as important as measurements.

In Professional Practice 2, the topics we covered were of a different scope compared to what we did in Professional Practice 1. Among the topics we covered were :-

> Construction Disputes
> Construction Delays
> Construction Claims
> Rights of Setting Off
> Partial Possession by the Employer
> Determination of Contractor's Employment by the Employer
> Determination of Contractor's Employment by the Contractor
> Practical Completion and Penultimate Certificate
> Final Accounts
> Building Insurances
> Dispute Resolution through Mediation/Adjudication/Arbitration
> Comparison between PAM Form and JKR Form of Contract

For this module, what made it interesting was there was a different approach on the assignments. We had our first coursework which was 15% of our total module marks. This coursework required us to pair up with a member, scheduled and decided by our lecturer. We were then supposed to present a seminar on a topic which we were assigned to. I was assigned to Construction Claims and I personally enjoyed preparing for the presentation. Marks were given for creativity, clarity as well as fluency in our presentation. We got the opportunity to look up case law which were related to our topic as well, so that we could present and share it with our course mates in tutorial.

The second coursework which was given to us was the Final Account Assessment group assignment. The assignment comprised of 15% of our total module marks. This assignment was tough as we faced questions where there were clear black and white answers. There were a lot of grey areas where we needed to really look out for and consult our seniors for ideas and solutions. However, later on we learnt that these were the questions that we may be facing when we apply to be a registered surveyor after we graduate. Hence I am glad we were given the opportunity to attempt them even before we graduate.

We had a mid-term test in between the two coursework, which took up 20% of our total module marks. The mid-term test covered 3 topics which were Construction Disputes, Construction Delays as well as Construction Claims.

Overall, Sr. Eddie who taught us this module made it very interesting for us and I really appreciate his effort in explaining again and again the things we were unclear about and needed clarifications. He gave us lots of real life examples on the situations we needed to understand to apply what we learnt in the module as well. I would say this module prepares us a lot, in facing the future when we graduate in a year's time and work towards being a registered surveyor.
