Software Application - QSB 2813

In Software Application, we learnt how to master and manage two different software which are the CostX and Buildsoft software. We started off with Buildsoft where we learnt to how do measurements using the software, come up with bills of quantities, build up composite rates, complete progress payments as well as cost plans. We were introduced to BIM software where we had our first group assignment regarding BIM software. We were asked to compare different BIM software in the market and come up with a suggestion of the best BIM software after comparing the advantages and disadvantages of the various software.

Right after we completed our syllabus regarding the Buildsoft software, we moved on to learn about CostX. I definetely enjoyed learning CostX as it was so much easier compared to doing measurement manually. It wasn't very difficult to learn but it only required memory and more memory. The only challenge in this software application module is to get familiar with the steps and remember them. We had to familiarise ourselves with the steps and methods of measurement using the software before fully understanding and fully remembering the methods of doing measurement with the software.

In CostX, we covered 2D CAD measurement, 3D/BIM models, quantities spreadsheet, auto-revisioning, and all of those we learnt in Buildsoft. We could do all the exact same things we did in Buildsoft, in CostX except for the progress payments and cost plans. Clearly we could see the difference in these two software.

We were given another individual assignment which tested us on CostX. We were required to use our measurement 4 group assignment plans to do the exact same measurement using CostX instead of doing it manually. This is one assignment which I really enjoyed doing as by doing it, I could familiarise myself more on CostX because I had to keep repeating the steps for measurements of the same element in the project. Through this, I managed to practise and remember the steps in measuring using CostX. Not only that, we were required to complete the assignment with bills of quantities and build up the rates as well. Through this, I managed to reinforce again what I learnt in previous lectures and indirectly also reinforce what I learnt in our Estimating module as well as Measurement modules from semester 1 up till semester 4.

Overall it was an enjoyable learning session in the computer lab with our lecturer. This module is something different as we got to learn everything in a different manner, no longer manually but using the software in the computer. It was definitely an eye-opener-module in Semester 4.
