Measurement 5 - QSB 3115

This subject basically covered the measurements of two main topics which are the Mechanical and Engineering Works, as well as the Civil Engineering works. The two main topics further branched out into sub topics.

Mechanical and Engineering Works :-
- Electrical Works
- Cold Water System
- Sanitary Installation
- Air Conditioning System
- Fire Protection Works

Civil Engineering Works :-
- Earthworks
- Environmental Protection and Enhancement
- Precast Concrete Works
- Reinforced Earth Wall
- Railway Tracks

Instead of only concentrating on the principles of SMM2, we were introduced to the MYCESMM which are principles for civil engineering works. It was something entirely new to me, hence it was interesting.

In this subject, we had a midterm test where we were tested on two topics, Electrical Works as well as Cold Water System. The midterm test was 25% of our overall marks for this module.

Following that was our group assignment which covered the Earthworks topic. The assignment was 25% of our total marks for the module. We had a total of 5 members in our group. The group assignment helped us a lot in further understanding the Earthworks topic and it gave us a lot of practice in doing the questions.

Overall, throughout the course of this module, I have learnt a lot of new things besides just measurement. Among them are of course the principles of MYCESMM and even the M&E and Civil Engineering Works were all new to us. Previously in the semesters before, we only concentrated on building works. It is interesting to know these little parts of a construction project. These two big topics also gave me a whole new understanding with a bigger picture, of the whole meaning of a construction project.

Our lecturers, Mr Simon Chee and Mr Ramar Subramaniam were very helpful throughout the course of this semester. They were very willing to guide us through everything we did not understand. Since most of the topics were very new to us, in the manner of calculation as well as description and measurement, they were very patient and guided us from scratch.

I definetely appreciate and I have enjoyed this module as it helped me to have a deeper understanding and much more complete an understanding, towards the whole measurement aspect as a potential quantity surveyor.
