Measurement 4 - QSB 2125

In the measurement 4 module, we covered a number of topics. The few main topics were namely the Sewerage Reticulation, Surface Water Drainage, Concrete Piling, Roads and Pavement, Water Reticulation as well as Alteration and Demolition.

In these main topics were sub headings such as sewerage piping, manhole, brick drain, sump, roadworks, road kerbs as well as pavements. Overall we have learnt way harder topics compared to the topics we had in measurement 3. To me, the topics in measurement 4 included mostly the tough sections of construction work measurements. As to compare with measurement 1, 2 and 3, I would say that measurement 4 had been the toughest but very worth learning.

We had a midterm test which covered the first two main topics which are the Sewerage Reticulation and the Surface Water Drainage topics. The four sub topics which were covered were sewerage piping, manhole, brick drain and sump. However, it was different in Semester 4 as our test covered our understanding regarding the SMM2 as well. We were tested on the clauses which we had to remember and their meaning as well as application. We were also taught in class during lectures, to write description for our measurement based on the requirements of the SMM2. Hence in the midterm test, we were also given a section where we were asked to correct the description given which was not done according to the SMM2.

Our lecturer, Sr. Chang Khong Thong was very strict with our SMM clauses throughout our lectures, tutorials and also our midterm. This was to make sure that we understood the SMM clauses thoroughly and we knew how to apply it to our measurement descriptions when needed.

Throughout this semester, we had a major group assignment which carried a total of 20 marks. We were asked to calculate all the elements of a double storeys residential building. For my group, we ended up measuring a two and a half storey terrace house as we could get sufficient information for that particular construction project. We divided the work among ourselves and did all the measurements followed by bills of quantities.

We were also required to prepare a tender document upon submission of the group assignment. It was tough working as a big group consisting of 6 of us in a group but we made it through slowly but surely. I personally feel that it helped how our lecturer separated works for every 6 of us. Through this way, members did not have to argue over choosing elements to measure. The elements to measure were fixed accordingly and it helped. It was fair and there were no overlapping of measurement neither were there any under measured elements.

Overall I feel that this module helped a lot in preparing us for our internship semester. In this module, not only we learnt a lot in the main topics but we got the opportunity to refresh our memory regarding topics from the previous semester as well. All in one, we are set ready for our internship.
