The Financial Management module was something different to us as we did not have any other financial subjects besides Accounting back when we were in our foundation years. It was quite a tough subject as it was difficult to understand certain topics covered in the module. Some financial information and topics were very in-depth and I found it a little difficult to relate to why we needed such deep financial knowledge as quantity surveyors.
However, as we went through the module, I began to understand a little more every week on why we needed the knowledge. It was important that we knew about financial management in case we plan on starting our own business or firm in the future. It wouldn't only be important, it would be very important.
The topics we covered in this module were :-
> Introduction to Financial Management
> Company Finance & Accounts
> Financial Information System (Part 1)
> Financial Information System (Part 2)
> Capital Investment Decisions (Part 1)
> Capital Investment Decisions (Part 2)
> Budgeting
> Firm Management - Estimating Costs
> Firm Management - CVP Analysis
> Financial Statement Analysis (Part 1)
> Financial Statement Analysis (Part 2)
> Strategic Cost Management
The topics got heavier towards the end of the semester.
In this module, we had our midterm test which took up 20% of our total module marks. The midterm test covered topics from week 1 till week 6. We then had a group assignment which took up 30% of our total marks. This group assignment was different from the rest. We had 5 members in a group, which was the minimum needed in a group, hence the workload was heavy for each of us. This assignment required us to get the financial reports of a public listed company, to which we chose Eco World Development Berhad. Following that, we needed to draw up financial analysis as well as forecasts for the company. We also needed to calculate financial ratios for the company for two years, to compare their financial standing.
Based on our calculations, we had to evaluate and draw up conclusions on how the company was performing throughout the 2 years and what are the challenges the company is most likely to be facing in the future. This assignment was a little different than other modules and harder as well. However, with cooperation from the whole group, we managed to make it through. The write up and submission of the written report took up 25% of the total marks for this assignment.
For the remaining 5%, we had to do a presentation based on what we have researched and found from the company's financial reports. We were evaluated and graded based on a few aspects which are the quality of our contents, language, clarity, dressing as well as composure.
Overall I feel that this module is tough but worth learning. I would believe that it would bring a lot of help to us in the future, in whatever we decide to settle as and to do.
